The Michaelerplatz (English: St. Michael's Square) is a major square in the center of Vienna. It is a baroque, star-shaped square that functions as the point of intersection of several inner-city streets – the Kohlmarkt, the Herrengasse, the Schauflergasse, and the Reitschulgasse – as well as the northeast entry point to the Hofburg. The square is named after St. Michael's Church, which lies on the eastern part of the Michaelerplatz.

The Austrian Parliament building is a Greek revival style building, constructed from 1874 to 1883. This palace has not only a political importance (here the Parliament of Austria conducts the sittings), but it has also a high tourist relevance, thanks to the Pallas-Athene Fountain (Pallas-Athene-Brunnen) which stands in front of it. This wonderful example of artwork was created between 1893 and 1902 to give an allegorical representation of the four most important rivers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
