This international landmark, as seen on the external public-facing door of the baptistery, was designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti (between 1425-1452) and is an icon of the renaissance. The mosaic on the central tympanum (above the main gate) of the 19th-century Duomo was crafted in Venice in 1886 based on designs by Nicolò Barabino. It shows Christ seated on a throne, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. It also includes local saints, notably St Reparata and St Zenobius, who serve as patrons of Florence. The lilies in the foreground symbolize Florence while the blue orb in Christ's left hand symbolises the world or the universe.

Karanlk Kilise, or the Dark Church, was a monastic compound built in the 11th century.  It is decorated with scenes from the New Testament:  Christ Pantocrator, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, First Bath, Last Supper, Betrayal of Judas, Crucifixion, Anastasis. The  frescoes, depicting scenes from the New Testament, are the best preserved in all of Cappadocia and a fine example of 11th-century Byzantine art.   Goreme, Cappadocia, Turkey.
