Dead puffer fish washed up on beach with other debris.
This pufferfish may be an example of the taxidermist's art, but in this case it is filled with air. Clearly seen are the four 'teeth' that give this order of fishes the name Tetradontidae. These teeth deal with the natural prey of pufferfish, which are molluscs and crustaceans. 'Four-tooth' fishes include examples with names such as pufferfish, puffers, balloonfish, blowfish, bubblefish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, toadies, honey toads, sugar toads, and sea squab. They are closely related to the porcupinefish, which have large external spines. Pufferfish may be the second-most poisonous vertebrates in the world, after the golden poison frog. Organs such as the liver and skin can be highly toxic due to an accumulation of tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin. Some countries that enjoy cookery-on-the-edge will eat pufferfish, after it has been specially prepared, at which time the meat is considered a delicacy (even if still potentially lethal). Japan has its 'fugu', Korea its 'bok' and China its 'hetun'. This particular pufferfish came from the seas around Menorca. Similar fishes: .

An underwater image of a Porcupine fish (Diodon hystox) which is a type of puffer fish. The name comes from their ability to puff their venomous spines up as a defence mechanism, if threatened. They are also known as Balloonfish. These fish are known to be very friendly with and curious of scuba divers. Image taken whilst scuba diving in the Andaman Sea, Thailand.

Washed up Porcupine fish, similar in looks to puffer fish or balloon fish on a tropical beach of Indian Ocean. This exotic creature is also known as balloon fish because for self defense, the evolution has developed the organs of fish in such a way, that sensing threat, the fish swells up from the middle like a balloon firing in outward direction its prickly long spines, deadly enough to scare its predators away. Such washing up of exotic fishes are very common these days, endangering the existence of many of such species worldwide, the reason behind this may be attributed to the uncontrollable and excessive fishing by the coastal fishermen. Besides, on the beaches neighboring very wide area adjoining harbour, ship oil spills are causing marine pollution polluting the water, thus lowering the oxygen levels. Climate change due to global warming is also threatening a wide array of marine species.
Not all fish can be sold on the fish market and those who can't are being left on the beach for the birds. This one is found outside the fish market in Galle in the south of Sri Lanka

I was just walking along the beach and found this. The black sand on Taranaki beaches was almost completely covering his body but left some extremities showing. One of the strangest and coolest things I've found.
