Nijmegen, The Netherlands, - July 19, 2016: The first day of the 100th edition of The Four Day Marches (the Day of Elst) started at 4 am crossing after the few hunders meters the Waalbrug (notorius bridge during the Market Garden Operation in WWII) and headed towards Elst. The temperatures jumped over 30 degrees Celsius, challenging the strength of the participants. The Four Day Marches, is the world'€™s biggest multi-day walking event. The Four Day Marches is organised every year in Nijmegen in mid-July as a means of promoting sport and exercise. Participants walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers (this year, also 55 kilometers) daily, and on completion receive a royally approved medal (Vierdaagsekruis). This year is the 100th edition of the marches, which has gathered a record number of participants (50,000) and visitors to the city. The participants are mostly civilians, but there are also a few thousand military participants.
