On small bodies of water, pairs of mute swans (Cygnus olor) are always aggressive to others of their own kind. This male, and his equally aggressive partner, spent a good half-hour chasing after a younger pair. This lake is made up of a chain of three, in total about a quarter of a mile long, but the resident pair were resolutely hostile. Chases often stop at the water's edge, but after a while it was obvious that the intruders did not intend to leave. At this point, they were chased, on foot, on land.
