$Some historic context provided by the Polk County Conservation Board:\nThe Owens covered bridge was built around 1875. Covered bridges were built to protect the trusses (lumber supports) from weathering which caused bridges to fail sooner. This Howe Truss bridge was built to span the North River Channel. It was once part of a road that went from “Martin’s Ferry” to Winterset. Both the road and the river were relocated in 1939 which left the bridge abandoned. The bridge was located about 2.5 miles north of Carlisle on Gordon Owens’ land.\nThe building of Red Rock Reservoir would have flooded this last remaining covered bridge in Polk County. Therefore, Polk County Conservation purchased the bridge in 1965 for $1. In 1968 it was moved to its current location (then known as Yeader Creek Park).$

Sugar Creek is a tributary of the Wabash River in Indiana. It travels about 93 miles prior to reaching the Wabash River in Montezuma. Two state parks, Turkey Run and Shades State Parks are on the Sugar Creek which are notable for it's canyons and small waterfalls in this rocky terrain. Several Covered Bridges cross it's waters.

Built in 1871, Fallasburg Bridge lies within what is now known as the Fallasburg Pioneer Village. It has lattice work trusses made of white pine timber. As in all covered bridges, the roof and siding serve to protect the bridge timbers from rot. Repairs in 1905 and 1945 have kept the bridge safe for traffic for one hundred years.

Madison County, Iowa, is home to some of the world's most famous covered bridges. Many are located on rural roads far off the beaten path.

With 20 covered bridges, Lane County, Oregon has more covered bridges than any other county west of the Mississippi. Seventeen of these bridges are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The first bridge across Big Fall Creek was built in 1890. A second nearby bridge, the Unity Covered Bridge, was built in 1936. The first bridge then became a pedestrian only bridge and was eventually removed in 1953. The Unity Bridge is located near Lowell, Oregon, USA.
