Theodore Dwight Woolsey graduated from Yale in 1820 and went on to serve as the 10th President of Yale College from 1846 to 1871. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the modernization and expansion of the institution.\n\nThe sculpture was created in 1896 by John Ferguson Weir (1841–1926) and placed prominently in the quadrangle of the Old Campus. \n\nA tradition has arisen wherein freshmen Yalies rub President Woolsey’s right shoe in order to ensure a good academic result at Yale. You can see the shiny bronze on the toe of that shoe as the tradition continues to this day, even among visitors to Yale.

Statue of Theodore Dwight Woolsey, 10th president of Yale University (1846-1871). It is a tradition for students to rub the toe of the statue for good luck. Sculptor John Ferguson Weir created this bronze statue in 1896. It was installed in front of the entrance of Dwight Hall. This building is Yale's Center for Public Service and Social Justice, a volunteer center on Yale University's Old Campus, New Haven, Connecticut.
