The detail of one of the monumental statues of angels along the Ponte Sant'Angelo (Saint Angel bridge), in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. This bridge was built under the emperor Hadrian in 134 AD. to connect the heart of Rome with his mausoleum, currently Castel Sant'Angelo. A few centuries later, under the pontificate of Pope Clement IX, the architect and sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to create the current balustrade decorated with ten statues of the Angels of the Passion of Christ. According to the Christian tradition, each Angel holds one of the relics of the Passion of Christ, such as the cross, the veil of Veronica, the nails, the spear, the pillar of the scourging, etc. Designed by Bernini, the statues were made under his direction in 1669 by the pupils present in his school of sculpture.
