Here are five of the nine classical, allegorical figures at the USS Maine Monument. All nine were sculpted by Attilio Piccirelli (1866-1945.) \n\nThe boy in the prow of the boat originally held two metal laurel wreaths, symbolizing peace and victory. They were stolen so often, the no longer are replaced. \n\nThe sculpture group fat the front of the pylon bears the ungainly name, “The Antebellum State of Mind: Courage Awaiting the Flight of Peace and Fortitude Supporting the Feeble.” This refers to the state of affairs following the explosion of the Maine but before war was declared. Peace stands with her arms outstretched over the others. The seated man represents Courage, impatiently waiting to get into action. The seated woman is Fortitude, comforting a child, apparently one who lost a father on the Maine. \n\nPiccirilli used Audrey Munson as his model for Peace, as well as the female figure at the top of this monument and at the back of the pylon. Munson posed for more than a dozen important statues, sculptures, and friezes, most of which still stand to this day across Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is now often called “America’s First Supermodel.”\n\nThe prow of the boat, symbolizing American naval power, is modeled on those of the navy of classical Rome. The “boat” sits in the bowl of a semi-circular fountain. \n\nThe monument sits at the southwest corner of Central Park, adjacent to Columbus Circle.
