The largest and probably most well-known gloriette is in the Schonbrunn Palace Garden in Vienna. It was built in 1775 as the last building constructed in the garden according to the plans of Austrian imperial architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg.\nThe front face bears the following inscription:\nIOSEPHO II. AVGVSTO ET MARIA THERESIA AVGVSTA IMPERANTIB. ERECT. CIICCLXXV.\n(Erected under the reign of Emperor Joseph II and Empress Maria Theresa, 1775.)

They are the last of the usual crowd of people who every day visit this magnificent palace, which in earlier times was the summer residence to various Habsburg rulers. Its surrounding buildings and the huge park have been added to the UNESCO's world cultural heritage list in 1996.

The building is located on the Ringstraße in the first district, Innere Stadt, near Hofburg Palace and the Palace of Justice. It was built to house the two chambers of the Imperial Council (Reichsrat), the bicameral legislature of the Cisleithanian (Austrian) part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since its construction, the Parliament Building has been the seat of these two houses, and their successors—the National Council (Nationalrat) and the Federal Council (Bundesrat)—of the Austrian legislature.
