Baltimore’s Washington Monument was constructed between 1815 and 1829 as the centerpiece for Mount Vernon Place, an urban square in Baltimore, Maryland.\n\nThe neoclassical structure, designed by American architect Robert Mills (1781–1855), dominates the Mount Vernon neighborhood, standing 179 feet tall. \n\nThe monument consists of a base, now containing a small museum, a giant Doric column, about 130 feet tall, surmounted by a drum and dome, upon which stands a statue of George Washington. He is depicted as General Washington, resigning his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (1783, Annapolis MD.)\n\nSeen from this low angle, General Washington bears a striking resemblance to the late actor James Cagney.
