Liberty Cap, a dormant hot spring cone, got its name because of its resemblance to the peaked caps worn during the French Revolution, known as 'liberty caps' or 'Phrygian caps.' This geological feature was named by members of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870.

Silver Gate (The Hoodoos) on Highway 89 in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. These large travertine limestone boulders formed due to an earthquake on nearby Terrace Mountain and are not actually Hoodoos but were incorrectly named so and the name has stuck.
