This vintage lithograph print depicts the portrait of a chief of an Araucanian tribe in Chile, circa 1856. He may be of the fierce Mapuche people, who resisted both Inca and Spanish conquest attempts. He is holding a spear and is wearing traditional tribal dress. Lithograph is a facsimile of the painting by John Mix Stanley (1814 - 1872). Published in the 1856 record of an American expedition to Chile, it is now in the public domain. Herculaneum Italy\n\nMarcus Nonius Balbus was a Roman politician of the 1st century BC. BC from Herculaneum. He was an important patron of his hometown and a confidant of the future Emperor Augustus. As a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79, which buried the city under ash and preserved it, many inscriptions and statues have been preserved that document his life and work in exceptional detail. \nAn inscription in his honor above the entrance to the stage of the theater was probably placed after his death and marked the place for his chair of honor. The placement opposite the place of honor for the late consul Appius Claudius Pulcher shows the prominent position of Balbus in Herculaneum.
