This is London's skyuline as viewed from Waterloo Bridge in London's West End, April 2011. Starting at left: At the top of Ludgate Hill stands St Paul's Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral dedicated to Paul the Apostle. It is built on the highest point in the City of London. Built on the site of former places of worship, the present building dates from the 17th century and was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Next is the Heron Tower, also referred to as 110 Bishopsgate, the tallest building in the City of London and the third tallest building in London as a whole. Due to open in 2011, permission to build it was disputed because of its proximity to St Paul's Cathedral when viewed from Waterloo Bridge. Tower 42 (formerly the NatWest Tower) is the second tallest skyscraper in the City of London. It was designed by Richard Seifert and engineered by Pell Frischmann, and its address is 25 Old Broad Street. It was built between 1971 and 1980. 30 St Mary Axe, the Swiss Re Building, is locally known as The Gherkin. Another of the city's prominent buildings, it was completed in December 2003 and opened at the end of May 2004. Designed by Norman Foster, it stands on the former site of the Baltic Exchange building. The cluster of buildings on the extreme right are in London's Docklands. They are skyscrpaers built to compete with the tall city buildings. From left to right, they are the HSBC Tower; One Canada Square (Canary Wharf Tower, or Canary Wharf), currently London's tallest building; and the Citigroup Centre.
