The small tree or shrub, that is native to Eastern North America, is covered with abundant clusters of flowers, lasting for several weeks in late spring and early summer. The flowers are very showy and cup-shaped with five sides and range in color from deep pink to white with purple markings inside. The flowers give way to brown fruits in autumn that persist into winter.
