This illustration comes from a beautiful book on the history of arts in Italy. It was published in 1884 in Germany by the famous art historian Carl von Lützow. The book is in an excellent condition, with superb copperplate prints fine on paper. You will find a lot more of these pictures in the lightbox below.

The islands are in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay lying between the mouths of the Po and the Piave rivers (more exactly between the Brenta and the Sile).\n\nThe Rialto Bridge (Italian: Ponte di Rialto; Venetian: Ponte de Rialto) is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Connecting the sestieri (districts) of San Marco and San Polo, it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction as a pontoon bridge in 1173, and is now a significant tourist attraction in the city.
