A few rays of sunlight cut an intense blue sky above the statue of an Angel along the Ponte Sant'Angelo (Saint Angel bridge), in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. This bridge was built under the emperor Hadrian in 134 AD. to connect the heart of Rome with his mausoleum, currently Castel Sant'Angelo. A few centuries later, under the pontificate of Pope Clement IX, the architect and sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to create the current balustrade decorated with ten statues of the Angels of the Passion of Christ. According to tradition, it was Bernini's pupils who sculpted the statues of the Angels in 1669. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
