Fall comes early to the high country of Montana. While the plains are still baking in the heat of summer, the Continental Divide is taking on the hues of autumn. This scene of the Rocky Mountain Front Range was photographed from the Pine Butte Guest Ranch near Choteau, Montana, USA.

Stanley, Idaho- June 16, 2011:\n\nMiddle Fork of the Salmon River, Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area: This landscape canyon view is looking downriver from the upper bench above the Camas Creek Confluence.\n\nThe Middle Fork is a 104-miles of crystal-clear water that flows through the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and is one of the original eight rivers in the nation designated as Wild and Scenic on October 2, 1968. \n\nOver 10,000 people float the Middle Fork of the Salmon River each year. The Middle Fork originates 20 miles northwest of Stanley, ID, at the intersection of Bear Valley and Marsh Creeks, and is known world-wide for extraordinary whitewater float trips. These multi-day float trips offer a wide sampling of scenic beauty along the banks, including alpine forests, high mountain deserts and a sheer, rock-walled canyon—the third deepest in North America! Beyond rafting, the area offers natural hot springs, prime fly fishing (catch-and-release only), scenic wilderness hikes with glimpses of prehistoric paintings and abandoned settler cabins, dazzling night skies, and geologic evidence of the river’s continuing efforts to carve its way through the Idaho Batholith.

Stanley, Idaho- August 12, 2011:\n\nThis image is of a majestic Sweep Boat tied up at Rock Island Camp on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho's Frank Church Wilderness Area at low water in August. \n\nModern Sweep Boats are unique to the Salmon River, and most particular, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Sweep boats can only be steered; there is no method of propulsion other than using the constant gradient of the current to allow for this baggage barge of sorts (designed to carry about 70-80% of a trip’s gear and supply load) to be floated downstream. Controlled and steered only by two long sweep arms (two big rudders mounted to the bow and stern), the sweep boat builds momentum and uses the gradient to fall downstream. The mechanics of how they move builds momentum, and when properly ‘driven’, the boat moves faster than the current floating it and has the ability to track in and around the rapids. There are no brakes and stopping a boat without prior planning is often wishful thinking.\n\nUsually the boatman (or woman) is the first boat to leave in the morning and remains alone for the day. An old boatman’s adage is that a sweep boat is hours of boredom broken up by moments of sheer terror: if you get into trouble help is far behind and well delayed.
