The Arizona Evening Primrose (Oenothera caespitosa), also known as the Tufted Evening Primrose, grows throughout the American Southwest.  It has 4 heart shaped white petals and blooms from April to August.  The plants may go dormant in summer and reappear during and after the monsoon rains.  The leaves are long, narrow and serrated.  The evening primrose is a perennial plant.  The seedlings put down a taproot for moisture and the mature plant has fine roots near the soil surface.  This evening primrose was photographed on Campbell Mesa in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
