It flows 1,896 miles through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas where it is the international border between the United States and Mexico. It eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. In northern New Mexico the river flows 50 miles through a tectonic chasm known as the Rio Grande Gorge.
