Vatican City, March 04 -- Some seagulls fly over the square of St. Peter's Basilica, in the historical and religious heart of Rome, with the Basilica and the Apostolic Palace in the background. Characterized by giant columns and pilasters, the majestic facade of St. Peter's Basilica (118 meters wide and 48 high), was conceived by the architect Carlo Maderno to complete Michelangelo's previous project and built between 1608 and 1614. The square, the work of the Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and built in 1657 during the pontificate of Alexander VII, consists of a large oval space of 35300 square meters, surrounded on the sides by four colonnades, composed of 284 columns and 88 pillars, decorated in the upper part with 96 monumental marble statues. The Basilica of St. Peter's, in the Vatican, is the center of the Catholic religion, one of the most visited places in the world and in Rome for its immense artistic and architectural treasures.
