Paramaribo, Suriname: Waterkant (Waterfront) is the oldest street in Paramaribo, located directly on the quay of the Suriname River. Due to its iconic appearance, it forms a central part of the historic city center of Paramaribo, which has been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Many of the original buildings burned in the city fire of 1821 . After the fire, the architect Johan August Voigt gave Paramaribo a new cityscape by building an ensemble of monumental buildings on the Waterkant. The Valley, Anguilla: House Wallblake is a former colonial sugar plantation. Built in 1787 by sugar planter Will Blake, it is believed to be the oldest structure on Island. Although destroyed by the French in the late 1790s , it was rebuilt by the British and is today fully restored. Its complex of kitchens, stables and its slave quarters are intact.
