Karanlk Kilise, or the Dark Church, was a monastic compound built in the 11th century. This Basilica, built on the Celian hill since the 4th century in the early Christian era, is also known as the Cathedral of Rome and is the most important and ancient basilica in the Western world. Inside the apse a series of magnificent Byzantine mosaics depicting the Emperor Constantine, while the central nave was designed in the Baroque period by the architect Francesco Borromini.
