Hedge mustard (Sisymbrium officinale) in close up. Hedge mustard (also known as wireweed) is related to cabbage plants (Brassicaceae), and grows plentifully on roadsides and wasteland, and as a weed of arable land. Originating in Europe and North Africa, it is now well-established throughout the world. Despite its name, it is distinct from mustard plants of the genus (Brassica). Plants with the specific name (officinale) are certain to have some connection with folk medicine. Hedge mustard has a history of use for soothing stomachs and throats - from the latter comes an alternative name, singer's weed. The leaves have a bitter cabbage-like flavour and they are used either in salads or cooked as a pot herb (in cultivar versions).
