A Staithe is a wharf or landing stage where the returning boats would unload their catch, The spandrels on the sign, have a carving of a whelk. Whelk fishing was a significant local industry for much of the late 19th and a large part of the 20th century. The fisherman would leave Brancaster Staithe for the whelk grounds ten or fifteen miles off shore. Not just whelks, but also crabs, sea urchins made up their catch.
