Paramaribo, Suriname: Fort Zeelandia - built in the early 17th century, when Dutch settlers founded a trading settlement near the indigenous village of Parmurbo, later Paramaribo. The English captured the fort in 1651 and named it Fort Willoughby, after Francis Willoughby. In March 1667, the Zeelanders under Abraham Crijnssen conquered the fort and the settlement. After Suriname's independence (1975) it was used to hold and torture political prisoners - Abraham Crijnssenweg, Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, Unesco World Heritage Site.
