Lesser spearwort (Ranunculus flammula) has narrow, spear-shaped leaves that distinguish it from other members of the buttercup family (which have similar yellow flowers but lobed leaves). Lesser spearwort grows on shaded marshy ground, wet shallow ditches and on the edges of ponds. Here, they are scattered at the edge of an artificial pond at Cranmer Green Nature Reserve in Mitcham, Merton, England. The poisonous sap of lesser spearwort has been known to kill grazing animals, and the Latin name (flammula) may refer to the inflammation that can occur if the sap comes into contact with human skin.

Caltha palustris, commonly called Marsh marigold, is a rhizomatous perennial of the Buttercup family that is native to stream margins, marshes, swamps and wet meadows. The common name, marsh marigold, is only descriptively accurate as to this plant’s habitat, because it neither looks like, nor is related to, marigolds, which is Aster family. It typically grows 12-18” tall on hollow, branching stems. Bright yellow flowers with 5-9 deep yellow petal-like sepals bloom in winter and spring (February to June).
