The tailings from the mine are shown in the middle and top of the photo. Channels in the tailing show water erosion from rain.  There is a track towards the bottom of the photo, and some trees on the bottom left.\n\nThe photo was taken at a salt mine in Cardona, in the Spanish region of Catalonia, in the province of Barcelona. The salt mine is part of a mountain mass called Muntanya de Sal. The hill has been worked as a mine since Roman times; pieces cut from it have been carved by artists in Cardona into images, crucifixes and many articles of an ornamental kind. The photo was taken in May 2023
The Kennicott Mine, also called the Kennecott Mine, is located in Interior Alaska. This copper mine had its heyday in the early 1900’s. Located in the area known as McCarthy, this ghost town mine once employed hundreds of people.  Today it stands as a reminder of days gone by.  Visitors come from all across the world to step back into the days of the Kennicott Copper Mine.  This glacier field has a green tint to it. This comes from the copper in the dirt. During its heyday structures were created to hold back the ice and dirt. Today it is a reminder and a beautiful scene to observe.

The photo shows limestone formations formed by water erosion at Sima de San Pedro sinkhole in Spain. It is in Aragon, a region characterized by aridity and extreme temperatures. It is a chasm of karst origin, with a mouth of about 100 meters in diameter and a depth of 108, It is considered unique in Europe thanks to its complex and rich geological structure. Right at the bottom of the pit lies a lake that is 22 meters deep and contains 560,000 cubic meters of water.\n\nThis natural beauty is known as one of the most unique and important ecosystems in the region. Its interior is formed by an exceptional example of a microclimate that hosts over 25 species of vertebrates, including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, as well as important colonies of bats. The unofficial name for a large sandstone mound adjacent to the Cottonwood Road in southern Utah as it follows the north to south path of the geological formation known as the Cockscomb is Yellow Rock.  This formation consists of mainly white sandstone shot through with areas of intense yellow sandstone, crisscrossed with striations and folds.  It has been a favorite of photographers and hikers for year.

New Caledonia is one of the world's largest producers of nickel. It some 97% of N/C exports but causes adverse damage to the landscape and ecological damage. Mining began in 1876 but the boom years were 1969-72. Wetlands have been lost or spoilt and rivers choked by tailings. High levels of arsenic, lead and nitrates have affected coral reefs.
