Out of copyright. 19th century antique playing card with festive / Christmas back design by UK manufacturer de la Rue. The pretty back design shows green holly with orange and red berries, and follows on from famous designs by Owen Jones in the mid-1850s. The card is a five of spades with no indices and square corners, typical of the time, and appears to be non-reversible.

Chionanthus retusus, usually known as Chinese Fringe Tree, is a deciduous tree which is spectacular in full bloom. In late spring or early summer, it is literally covered with delicate clouds of slightly fragrant, pure white flowers with fringe-like petals. As the blooms fade, the petals drop like snow on the ground.

Crape myrtle is a deciduous tree or shrub, with especially handsome bark; the smooth gray outer bark flaking away to reveal glossy cinnamon brown bark beneath. Small white, red, pink or purple flowers are borne in clusters in early summer, often blooming again in late summer.
