Maidenhead, England - July 21, 2019: the River Thames passes rapidly over this weir, one of only 50 weirs remaining today on the Thames. A weir of one kind or another has stood on this particular site for over 600 years. Today, the weir maintains water levels so that boats and other river craft can pass through the adjacent lock, as well as controlling land drainage. The large sluices on Boulter's Weir are called 'buck gates'; a buck was a huge willow basket used to catch eels positioned upstream on the river.
