In London's Picadilly Circus square there is a fountain, and at the top of it is Anteros, although everyone calls it the fountain of Eros in the wrong way, since it is Anteros, the avenging god of unrequited love, not Eros or Cupid, his brother, who represented frivolous and passionate love. Anteros represents the most mature love, since this statue was erected to commemorate the Earl of Shaftesbury, a politician, philanthropist and social reformer, who during his inauguration was much criticized for not looking like a respectable symbolism for this Count.\nBuilt by Sir Alfred Gilbert between 1885 and 1893. During World War II, in 1939, it was removed for safety, and did not return to its place until 1948.
