Cape Town, South Africa - April 3, 2022: Surrounded by overgrowth of natural vegetation, a restaurant chalkboard lies abandoned in the aftermath of a fire that destroyed a restaurant a year earlier, on April 18, 2021. A devastating wildfire broke out that day on Table Mountain, threatening homes and ultimately burning down this restaurant, the Rhodes Memorial Tea Room, as well as part of the library of the University of Cape Town.

Checker Fiddleneck is the common name for a plant known to botany as Amsinckia Tessellata. A common wildflower in the Mojave Desert, yellow blossoms atop, the stems below are covered in small white hairs which can produce a skin irritation if handled. Here, in the partially developed margins of Johnson Valley, they can be visualized thriving after an especially wet winter gives way to the warmer embrace of spring. Long may the area garner respect as a habitat for native ecology.

The Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis) is a type of squirrel found in the mountainous areas of western North America. Because of its stripes and cheek pouches the Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel is often thought of as a chipmunk. It is considerably larger than the chipmunk and lacks facial stripes. The semi developed margins proximate to Valley Center host many introduced species. However, among them is a species from the genus Datura, indigenous to the area.

Hypericum prolificum, commonly called Shrubby St. John's Wort, is herbaceous, perennial, deciduous or evergreen flowering shrub with a compact, dark green leaves, and yellow flowers. It is one of around 400 species of Hypericum, which include herbs, shrubs, and trees, with different bloom times and cultural requirements.
