The paddlefish is native to the Mississippi River basin, requiring large expanses of free-flowing river in which to complete its life cycle. The paddlefish can be distinguished by its large mouthand its elongated, spatula-like snout, called a rostrum, which is longer than the rest of the head. They are primitive Chondrostean ray-finned fishes.
