The detail of a fresco by Cimabue inside the Basilica Inferiore di San Francesco (Upper Basilica of San Francesco), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor since 1230. The construction of the Basilica consists of a Lower Basilica and an Upper Basilica, perfectly integrated. Over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity between peoples and between the different confessions of the world. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Husaby Church is one of the most interesting historical sites in Sweden. The present church was built in the early 1100s and influenced by German and English missionaries. Architecturally, it is remarkable for its steep walls and high towers, arguably the only Romanesque architecture in Sweden of that kind. Arches were added in the 15th century.

One of Tirol’s true architectural gems is the splendid Cistercian Abbey of Stams, founded in 1273. The photo shows the interior of the baroque collegiate church. The altar screen is overgrown with thick tendrils, a “Tree of Life”, springing from the base of the altar with the figures of Adam and Eve ascends via the central figure of the salvational “Immaculata” to the crucifixion as a symbol of redemption.
