They are popularly known as Daoíz and Velarde, the heroes of the Uprising of May 2nd, although sources indicate that they actually represent Hippomenes and Atalanta.\n\nThey are a symbol of national sovereignty and Spanish politics and frequently appear in news reports, as well as in the logo of the Congress of Deputies.
