The Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius) is a small migratory shorebird native to North and South America. This is a medium-sized sandpiper with a light brown spotted upper body and a white spotted belly. They have white circling the eye, yellow beak and pale-yellow legs. Their breeding habitat is around fresh water ponds and lakes across most of North America. In the winter they migrate across the southern states and south to South America. The spotted sandpiper’s diet consists of small insects such as midges and mayflies. This spotted sandpiper was photographed on the shore of Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

The common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) is a small Palearctic wader. This bird and its American sister species, the spotted sandpiper (A. macularia), make up the genus Actitis. They are parapatric and replace each other geographically; stray birds of either species may settle down with breeders of the other and hybridize. Hybridization has also been reported between the common sandpiper and the green sandpiper, a basal species of the closely related shank genus Tringa.
