Mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the annals of the Assyrian kings, Palmyra was subsequently incorporated into the Seleucid Empire, followed by the Roman Empire which brought it great prosperity. It is saddening that its present Roman ruins, declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, have come to be endangered in the 21st century by regional military and political strife.
