Image of the tourist site of Abu Simbel, Abu Simbel is an archaeological site of Lower Nubia on the left bank of the Nile in the world-famous aswan region. From the ancient city remain almost intact two temples that Ramses II (nineteenth dynasty) had dug in the sandstone of the western mountain, facing the Nile. The great temple, preceded by four seated colossi representing the pharaoh, was dedicated to Ra, Amun and Ramses. The first room of the temple is a hypostyle room, where there is a statue of Osiris, the next room is dedicated to the god Ptah. The small temple or temple of Hathor is preceded by six standing statues depicting the pharaoh and his wife Nefertari. Threatened with being submerged due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, these temples were cut block by block (1,305 blocks, some of which reached thirty tons) and raised 64 m above their primitive location on an artificial escarpment (1963-1968) following a protection campaign launched by Unesco.
