Pyramids of Giza, Giza Necropolis, Egypt - July 14, 2023: Police sitting in front of the pyramids of Giza. The Giza Necropolis is a large area near Giza, a suburb of Cairo that has many tombs and burial sites. It is also where you can find the famous Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, and more. The name comes from the ancient Greek word nekropolis, which literally means “city of the dead”. The Giza Complex was once near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, and the Giza plateau is where a number of pharaohs, queens, and nobles of the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt were buried. All three of Giza's pyramids and their elaborate burial complexes were built from roughly 2550 to 2490 B.C. The pyramids were built by Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.

In total there are more than 900 pyramids and tombs. The pyramids, mostly built of stone, are significantly smaller than the Egyptian pyramids with a height of less than 30 meters and served as burial places for the kings, queens and high officials of the historical empire of Kush in Nubia. Construction ranges from around 300 BC to about AD 300. The first pyramid at Meroe that can be attributed to King Ergamenes, who died about 280 BC.

The Nubian pyramids were built by the rulers of the ancient Kushite kingdoms. The area of the Nile valley known as Nubia, which lies within the north of present-day Sudan, was the site of three Kushite kingdoms during antiquity. The capital of the first was at Kerma (2500–1500 BCE). The second was centered on Napata (1000–300 BCE). The third kingdom was centered on Meroë (300 BCE-AD 300). The pyramids are built of granite and sandstone.\n\nHeavily influenced by the Egyptians, Nubian kings built their own pyramids 1000 years after Egyptian burial methods had changed.[1] In Nubia, pyramids were built for the first time at El Kurru in 751 BC.[2] The Nubian-style pyramids emulated a form of Egyptian private elite family pyramid that was common during the New Kingdom.[3] There are twice as many Nubian pyramids still standing today as there are Egyptian.[1] Forty of the pyramids were partially demolished by an Italian treasure hunter, Giuseppe Ferlini, in the 1830s.[4] The Nubian pyramids are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[5]

Jebel Barkal is a mountain located in modern Karima town on a large bend of the Nile River. Napata was a city-state of ancient Nubia funded in the 15th century BC, on the west bank of the Nile. The pyramids are funerary elements of the necropolis for the Nubian kings and queens, also known as the Black Pharaohs. There are more pyramids in Sudan tan in Egypt. The Nubian Desert is in the eastern region of the Sahara Desert, between the Nile and the Red Sea.
