A beautifully restored C-47 Skytrain sits at the Massey Air Museum ion the Eastern Shore of Maryland. \n\nThe C-47 Skytrain, also known as the Dakota in British military service, is a military transport aircraft that gained widespread fame during World War II. Developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner, the C-47 became one of the most versatile and widely used aircraft of the war.\n\nThe C-47's rugged construction and versatile design made it well-suited for a variety of roles in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. It was used for transporting supplies, evacuating casualties, dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines, and towing gliders.\n\nThe C-47 played a vital role in key Allied operations, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the airborne assaults on Sicily and Holland, and the resupply missions during the Siege of Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge. It also supported Allied forces in the China-Burma-India theater and the Pacific island-hopping campaign.
