The Northern Mockingbird is a member of a small New World family (Mimidae) of about 30 species, including other mockingbirds, thrashers, catbirds, and tremblers. This bird is common and widespread and ranges from the mid United States to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. As the scientific name implies (Mimus polyglottos= “many-tongued mimic”), the Northern Mockingbird is an extremely accomplished repeater of practically any sound that it hears, whether it be another bird or mechanical noises.
