Black Skimmer
The black skimmer is a very unique species with very distinct features such as its beak and its method of hunting. While the bird stays above water, its very long lower mandible stays underwater as it glides just over the surface and cuts through the water. The skimmer is the only bird with a beak that is longer on the bottom half, but this feature is necessary for its skimming method of hunting. Here, the bird's body is illuminated by the glow of the sunset as it cuts a straight line through the water. Its wings are beautifully spread wide open as its figure reflects across the pondwater.

Wonderfully, we can also see the skimmer's unique lower beak in this photo, as it is usually hidden underwater while gliding.
