$Short to medium hairless, tuberous-rooted; stem with 2-3 basal, brownish, sheaths. Flowers pink or reddish-lilac, sometimes white or purple, vanilla-scented, in a rather dense slender spike, the lateral sepals spreading, but the upper sepal and petals forming a hood; lip 3.5-5mm, 3-lobed with a longer, slender, slightly curved spur, 11-18mm, pointed, much longer than the ovary. Habitat: In a variety of places from grassland and open scrub, to marshes and fens, but more especially on calcareous soils, to 2700m. Flowering Season: June-July. Distribution: Throughout Europe, except the far north. \n\nThis Picture is made on a Chalk Hill in the South of Belgium (Ardennes) in June 2006.$
