The red or maroon flowers of sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella) make a vivid splash of colour amidst the green in this short acid grassland. This is Mitcham Common at its most spruce. Conservation work has taken place to clear large areas of prickly gorse and thorny brambles, leaving wide open areas for walkers and for spring growth, which is already on view. On the right hand side is a young gorse bush - controlling the spread of gorse (Ulex europaea) is a constant job of work for the conservators of the Common. Mitcham Common is low-lying, and parts of it are boggy in winter. This leads to the kind of acid conditions where peat can develop. Its status as an area that includes acid grassland is one of Mitcham Common's conservation strengths.

The red or maroon flowers of sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella) make a vivid splash of colour amidst the green in this short acid grassland. Also in view are gorse plants which, if left to their own devices, would soon dominate this open landscape. This is Mitcham Common at its most spruce. Conservation work has taken place to clear large areas of prickly gorse and thorny brambles, leaving wide open areas for walkers and for spring growth, which is already coming into view. Mitcham Common is low-lying, and parts of it are boggy in winter. This leads to the kind of acid conditions where peat can develop. Its status as an area that includes acid grassland is one of Mitcham Common's conservation strengths.
