Part of the spectacular summer meadow on Mitcham Common in Surrey, England, July 2011. Here, the meadow is dominated by a wildflower called weld ( Reseda luteola ). It is closely related to wild mignonette, and can grow very tall - easily as tall as a man. Similar to the better-known woad, weld has long been a source for a dye, coloured yellow. 'The truth is that the old English saffron does not mean crocus but any yellow colour, and generally distinguishes the weld, still retained in many parts of England and the very plant the Irish call Buidhe Mor, or Great Yellow. With this they dye their linen and fine woolen stuffs with different degrees of colour and fix the colour with urine. The yellow thus obtained is bright and lasting.' Also prominent in this photograph (growing low and glowing red) is sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella).
