(Artemisia vulgaris) (growing here on the left-hand side of the photograph) is a tall and unusual 'daisy' plant. It is common and has a long history of use in herbal medicine throughout Europe and Asia. The name mugwort is derived from 'midge herb', although its effectiveness in keeping midges at bay is in doubt. The Latin name 'Artemisia' derives from the Greek goddess Artemis, patron of maternity, since this herb was said to have properties that ease child-birth. Mugwort is sometimes called St. John's plant, because of a tradition of gathering the herb on St. John's Eve as protection against ailments. It was believed to enhance dreams if placed under one's pillow, which suggests certain narcotic / hallucinogenic properties. Early English names include a suggestion that the leaves were smoked as a tobacco substitute, perhaps as an early form of 'wacky-baccy': wormwood, felon herb, green ginger, sailors tobacco, St John's plant and wegwood. Surrey, UK. In the Isle of Man, it has long been a tradition (revived in the 1920s) to wear a sprig of mugwort on Tynwald ('Parliament') day.
