Marienplatz was named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column erected in its centre in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. Today the Marienplatz is dominated by the New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) on the north side, and the Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus, a reconstructed gothic) council hall with a ballroom and tower) on the east side.

The Michaelerplatz (English: St. Michael's Square) is a major square in the center of Vienna. It is a baroque, star-shaped square that functions as the point of intersection of several inner-city streets – the Kohlmarkt, the Herrengasse, the Schauflergasse, and the Reitschulgasse – as well as the northeast entry point to the Hofburg. The square is named after St. Michael's Church, which lies on the eastern part of the Michaelerplatz.

Oslo, Norway: Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters - Victoria Terrasse building, completed in 1890, then Norway's largest and finest tenement complex. Victoria Terrasse spans three quarters, with a 180 metres long façade. The complex was built for the Petersburg Company (originally the Algiers Company). The main architect was Henrik Thrap-Meyer, but other architects were also involved, including Olaf Due in collaboration with Paul Due and Bernhard Christoph Steckmest. The building was named after the then Norwegian and Swedish Crown Princess Victoria (1862–1930). It was taken over by the Norwegian government in 1913 and put to use by the police and various political departments. During the occupation of Norway in April 1940, the building was taken over by the German forces, housing the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo), which included the Gestapo.

$On 22 July 2011, Regjeringskvartalet was the site of a car bombing in connection with the 2011 Norway attacks. Eight people were killed and over 200 others injured, and several buildings were heavily damaged. Following the damage, the decision was taken by the government to demolish and reconstruct the Regjeringskvartalet to meet updated standards for security, working space and environmental regulations.\nA national memorial stands at Johan Nygaardsvolds plass at Regjeringskvartalet in Oslo. It was unveiled on 22 July 2016, and is temporary.$
