Rome, Italy-July, 1983: Spanish Steps in Rome with tourists in the 80s
Rome, Italy - April 16, 2016: Piazza Navona with crowds of people, probably mostly tourists, on an overcast morning in spring. The piazza (city square) was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian (Stadio di Domiziano), also known as the Circus Agonalis, commissioned around AD 80 by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome. It was originally mostly used for athletic contests. In the background is the Fountain of the four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini) with the Egyptian obelisk. To the left is another fountain, the Moor Fountain (Fontana del Moro). It represents a Moor, or African, standing in a conch shell, wrestling with a dolphin, surrounded by four Tritons. The large building to the left is the Sant'Agnese in Agone, a 17th-century Baroque church. The early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. Construction began in 1652.

The golden hour light illuminates the splendid facade of the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti and the monumental staircase of Piazza di Spagna, also known as the Spanish Steps, in the historic and Baroque heart of Rome. Built starting from 1502 in the Renaissance style, this church was commissioned by Charles VIII, King of France, to give a stable accommodation to the religious Order of the Minims. In 1570 the façade was rebuilt based on a design by the architects Giacomo Della Porta and Carlo Maderno, with the construction of the two characteristic bell towers. A masterpiece of the late Roman Baroque, the monumental staircase of the Trinità dei Monti was built in 1721 to connect the church with the underlying Piazza di Spagna. Designed by the architect and urban planner Francesco De Sanctis, the Spanish Steps were inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition quality.
