Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia: Nan Madol is a ruined town off Temwen Island, a subsidiary island of Pohnpei in the Caroline Islands archipelago. It was built using masonry of columnar basalt on man-made islands on a coral reef. Nan Madol was not a city in today's sense, but primarily a defined ritual center and residence of a political-religious elite. The megalithic structures of Nan Madol were built around 1180 AD. UNESCO world heritage site.
