Castle Geyser, a famous thermal feature, erupts in Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin not far from Old Faithful Geyser. Heated water run off produces colonies of colorful thermophilic organisms as seen in the foreground.
Castle Geyser was named in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition due to its striking resemblance to the ruins of a castle. It has one of the oldest and largest sinter cones in Yellowstone, indicating that it has been active for thousands of years.

Porkchop Geyser's name derives from its pork chop-shaped sinter mound. Measuring around 2 feet in diameter, the geyser was once a tranquil hot spring until 1971 when it began erupting intermittently. In 1989, it experienced a violent hydrothermal explosion, scattering debris over 200 feet away and significantly altering its appearance. In that year, a visitor named David Kirwan died after attempting to rescue his friend's dog from the hot spring.
Yellowstone National Park’s thermal features can be seen as the product of millions of years of geology at work. Geysers are hot springs that erupt periodically. The eruptions is the result of super-heated water below-ground becoming trapped in channels leading to the surface.

The sign taken in July 2023 says Giant Geyser's last eruption was in March 2019. It has since erupted on 23 November 2023. It is one of the tallest active geysers in the world. When it erupts, which is rare and unpredictable, it can shoot water up to 250 feet into the air, with eruptions lasting up to an hour. The geyser's large cone and powerful eruptions have made it a major attraction for visitors. Between July 2017 and March 2019, Giant had a total of 39 eruptions.
